We Asked a Boomer to Weigh in on ‘FBoy Island’ & She Didn’t Hold Back

HBO Max recently renewed its buzzed-about series, FBoy Island, for season two. The show follows three single women who travel to a remote island in the hope of finding love. The catch? Only 12 of the 24 contestants are considered dateable, because the other half are “self-proclaimed FBoys.”

Although FBoy Island has been making headlines as of late, we’re determined to figure out why. For example, does FBoy Island live up to the hype? Or is it so ridiculous, people can’t help but make fun of it?

That’s why we turned to a Boomer (adults age 57 to 75), who not only watched the first episode, but also provided her thoughts on the new show in general. Here’s what she had to say.

1. What Are Your First Thoughts On ‘fboy Island?’

Julie Corsetti/HBO Max

The Boomer admitted that FBoy Island is somewhat entertaining, but it defeats the purpose of going on national TV to find love. “The whole point of going on a dating show is to find someone you wouldn’t normally have met in the wild,” she explains. “These girls are supposedly here to find a husband. I don’t see the point in introducing them to undatable men when they’ve probably encountered plenty on their own time.” Amen to that.

Julie Corsetti/HBO Max

2. What Did ‘fboy Island’ Get Right?

Julie Corsetti/HBO Max

The Boomer said, “From what I’ve seen, very little.” She then added with a laugh, “I’m only teasing. I like how the show calls out men for ugly dating habits.”

She continued, “Other reality series—like The Bachelor and The Bachelorette—throw the contestants into a fairytale-like journey, where hot tubs appear out of nowhere, long distance is insignificant and top-notch engagement rings are gifted at no cost whatsoever. FBoy Island is more realistic in that it highlights the negative aspects of dating.”

Julie Corsetti/HBO Max

3. What Did ‘fboy Island’ Get Wrong?

Julie Corsetti/HBO Max

For starters, it doesn’t set a good example for people in the dating scene. “I understand the purpose of FBoy Island is to eliminate the self-proclaimed bad boys, but the series almost idolizes that type of behavior,” the Boomer explains. “There’s probably a young boy watching it right now, wondering, ‘If I act like a total idiot, then I can get on a reality show, too.’ What kind of standard is this setting for future generations?”

The Boomer proceeded to question the show’s format, which is practically destined for failure. “FBoy Island is too focused on the drama and not enough on the relationships,” she continued. “Producers are determined to air footage they deem ‘funny’ versus show romantic chemistry. It seems this series was created just for that and not what it’s advertised as, which is a dating opportunity.”

Julie Corsetti/HBO Max

4. Will You Continue Watching ‘fboy Island’?

Julie Corsetti/HBO Max

Surprisingly, the answer is a hesitant yes. The Boomer admitted that she’d need to watch more episodes of FBoy Island to determine whether it’s as predictable as it seems. However, she was surprised by the entertainment value.

“I enjoyed it more than I anticipated, but I still have some reservations,” she said. “For example, would I encourage my nephew to apply to be a contestant? Probably not. Would I bet money on the success of these relationships? Not a chance. But will I continue watching once I’ve caught up on all my priority shows? Perhaps.” Mission accomplished.

FBoy Island is now streaming on HBO Max.

According to food writer Katarina Cermelj, “a perfect blueberry muffin has to be quick to whip up, have a beautifully domed, caramelized top, be absolutely loaded with blueberries and have a moist, tender crumb.” We tend to agree—fortunately, this recipe for gluten-free blueberry muffins (from her new cookbook, Baked to Perfection) ticks all those boxes.

You notice the measurements are provided by weight, which may seem complicated, but leads to a way better result. Precision is key, so your baking scale will come in handy.

Other berries, such as raspberries or blackberries work well in these muffins, too,” she continues. “Or, try chocolate chip muffins: Instead of the blueberries, simply add dark or milk chocolate chips. An extra sprinkling of granulated sugar just before they go into the oven gives them a pretty sparkle, and a sweet crunch as you bite into them.”

15g fat

6g protein

17g sugars

280g gluten-free flour blend

80g almond flour

150g light brown soft sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon xanthan gum

½ teaspoon salt

Zest of 2 lemons (preferably unwaxed)

130g unsalted butter, softened

140g whole milk, cold (see note)

140g full-fat plain or Greek yogurt, cold (see note)

2 eggs, cold (see note)

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste

180g fresh or frozen blueberries

1 tablespoon granulated sugar, for sprinkling

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a 12-cup muffin tin with muffin liners.

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl, sift together the gluten-free flour blend, almond flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, xanthan gum and salt.

3. Add the lemon zest and butter and, using the paddle attachment (or a hand mixer fitted with double beaters), work the butter into the dry ingredients until the texture resembles breadcrumbs.

4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, yogurt, eggs, lemon juice and vanilla paste. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and whisk until you get a smooth, thick batter with no flour clumps.

5. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the blueberry-free batter into the bottom of each muffin liner. (This ensures that even if some blueberries do sink slightly during baking, the distribution of the fruit is fairly even throughout the muffins.)

6. Set aside about 2 tablespoons (30g) of the blueberries to sprinkle over the top of the muffins. Fold the remainder into the remaining batter in the bowl. Divide the batter equally between the 12 muffin liners, filling each to the brim.

7. Scatter the reserved blueberries on top of the muffins, sprinkle with granulated sugar, and bake until an inserted toothpick comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs attached, 20 to 22 minutes (if using fresh blueberries) or 24 to 26 minutes (if using frozen).

8. Remove the muffins from the tin and transfer to a wire rack to cool. The muffins are best on the day they’re made but can be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 4 days. When serving on days 3 or 4, reheat in the microwave for 5 to 10 seconds first.

Note: Cold ingredients (including the yogurt and eggs), as well as the thickness of the batter batter, help with the formation of the dramatically domed muffin top.

Let’s be real: We could all use more storage in our lives. No matter what it is that you’ve got laying around the house, things can pile up without a designated place to put them, and quickly. Besides, having all of your items on display in plain sight can be … messy, to say the least. That’s where great plastic storage cabinets come in. Whether you need them for inside your home, garage or office, these clutter solutions can really transform a room with their sleek drawers, large doors and metal accessories. And thanks to our tireless research of the options below, you’re bound to find one here that suits your needs.

But which one is right for you? There are plenty of things to think about when considering a storage cabinet, starting with the materials. Of all the options available, including wood, steel and marble, we’re particularly partial to plastic. In addition to being incredibly durable and long-lasting, a plastic storage cabinet isn’t nearly as heavy as other materials. They also come in many different styles to match nearly any décor.

You’ll also want to factor in how much weight the cabinet can hold, its size compared with the size of the room you need it for and its ease of setup. Organizational elements, meanwhile, like shelves or hooks for hanging, make for nice added bonuses. For all of that and more, check out all of our favorites below.

Launched in May 2021, sipMARGS puts a refreshing spin on ready-to-drink, low-calorie libations. They possess both the flavor of authentic tequila and the convenience of canned cocktails. Instead of leaning on malt liquor or wine for alcohol (like some other hard seltzers and bevs out there), sipMARGS uses top-quality tequila. Despite using real liquor, the margaritas are still low in calories, sugar and carbs. Each drink also boasts a 5 percent ABV, which is high enough to loosen you up but low enough that the bevs don’t taste like straight booze.

Each margarita contains only 120 to 130 calories, on par with a “skinny” marg that you may have ordered in the past, and 8 grams of carbs. They’re also carbonated, so the drinks’ citrusy notes shine even brighter in every sip with the help of effervescent bubbles. The ingredients are pretty standard and minimal: All the margaritas contain tequila, triple sec and sparkling water, while other ingredients like natural lime flavor and fruit juice vary from flavor to flavor.

sipMARGS is available in select stores in New Jersey, New York and Florida, but you can also order them online and save yourself a shopping trip. (sipMARGS ship to most U.S. states, except for Alabama, Arkansas, Illinoise, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Vermont.) If you buy a single-flavor four-pack, the cost comes out to $3 a cocktail, a third or quarter of what you’d pay for a margarita (which is likely loaded with sugar, BTW) at a bar or restaurant. If you spring for the variety pack, each drink is 50 cents more, but you’ll get to try all four flavors in one shot.

That’s all before shipping though: There’s a $15 flat-rate shipping cost plus taxes and a $5 carrier fee, meaning a $12 pack of margs actually comes out to $34, or $8.50 a drink. Shipping is reduced to $10 if you order more than $40 worth of product, so it may be worth it to you to stock up.

Not sure which to buy first? Read on for our reviews of each flavor (or just play it safe and spring for the variety pack—you know you want to).

1. Classic Sparkling Margarita

The first thing we noticed about the O.G. was its delightfully lime-y scent. It smells and tastes like a real margarita, but the sparkling water makes it a lighter, more refreshing sipper than a drink that’s mostly juice (or worse, syrupy store-bought sour mix). Its flavor is bright, citrusy and equal parts tart and sweet.

2. Sparkling Coconut Margarita

sipMARGS

Here’s that tropical vacation you ordered. sipMARGS’ coconut variety is light, refreshing and mildly sweet like the Classic. Our only complaint? We wish the coconut flavor came through a bit stronger; it’s definitely lime-forward at the front, and the coconut is more like the main aftertaste. We could see adding a splash of coconut-flavored seltzer, coconut water or coconut milk (or screw it, piña colada mix) to drive the flavor home.

3. Sparkling Mango Margarita

Mango margaritas can be sickeningly saccharine, since mangos are sweet by nature and often turned into a thick puree that can’t be watered down easily. But this one is a lot more palatable and easier to drink, thanks to bubbly sparkling water in the mix. Buckle up for juicy, fruity mango flavor with just the right amount of sweetness. Colored naturally with fruit and vegetable juice, we’d say this flavor is the best of the bunch.

4. Sparkling Mezcal Margarita

Contrary to popular belief, mezcal and tequila are different. Unlike tequila—which must be made in the Jalisco state of Mexico from exclusively blue agave—mezcal can be made from more than 30 different types of agave. The spirit’s signature smokiness and herbaceous notes are bold and impossible to ignore in this sweet-and-sour bev (which also contains tequila, BTW). If you like jalapeño margaritas, you’ll love the fruity, vegetal profile of this drink, even without the spice.

Taste: 18/20

The Ingenious Organization Trick Most People Overlook, According to Marie Kondo

ICYMI: Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo is now streaming on Netflix. The docuseries is similar to Tidying Up with Marie Kondo because it revolves around the one and only Marie Kondo teaming up with a variety of subjects, who all struggle with cleanliness.

In honor of the highly anticipated premiere, we watched the first episode to see what all the hype is about. The pilot, titled “The Joy of Family,” revolves around a father-son duo who own and operate an edible gardening business. (As in, they grow and sell edible plants.)

There are several takeaways from the cleanup, but there’s one key piece of advice that stood out from the rest because it’s often overlooked: Kondo suggests storing items vertically (instead of horizontally).

“I like to stand things up because it maximizes the space,” Kondo says via interpreter.

To fully understand her tip, let’s pretend we’re organizing a box filled with miscellaneous papers, trinkets, etc. As Kondo points out, people often stack items on top of one another. For example, we put a stack of papers at the bottom, followed by binders, books, and cords. By the time we’re finished, the original contents are buried by everything else.

Because of this, Kondo recommends standing up each item so that it’s vertical, not horizontal. Not only does this method maximize space, but it also enables us to see everything. “Even if it doesn’t belong to the same group or category, as long as you can spot it,” Kondo explains. “I try to imagine, like, a store display. It’s apparent to anyone what goes where.”

Vertical stacking can be applied to countless organization projects, whether you’re sorting old files or cleaning up a toolbox—the concept remains the same.

We’re totally stealing this idea.

Is Your Toddler Curious About Their Private Parts? Here’s What to Say (and What Not to Say)

Rolling over, crawling, walking, baby’s first words. Yep, the early years of parenthood play out as a succession of memorable and heartwarming milestones. However, not every major development is the stuff of scrapbooks and family photo albums. Case in point: That super awkward phase when your child first discovers his or her own nether regions—and proceeds to develop, err, a keen interest in them for some time to come. Fear not, because this type of body exploration in toddlers is totally normal and healthy.

That said, this new behavior can be a bit fraught for parents who find themselves torn between a desire to uphold standards of body positivity and a natural aversion to, well, watching a kid walk around the playground with his hands in his pants. So we spoke to Dr. Pierrette Mimi Poinsett—pediatrician and medical consultant at Mom Loves Best—to find out the best way to cut through the uncomfortable feelings and address your tot’s latest developmental leap in the healthiest way possible. Read on for some sound advice from the expert.

Use Anatomically Correct Vocabulary With Your Child

First and foremost, Dr. Poinsett wants parents to know that “toddlers are naturally curious about their bodies.” It also stands to reason that said curiosity would be directed most towards the parts of the body that are often covered up and out of sight. As such, you needn’t worry if you notice your kid is starting to get to know their goods.

It’s also never too soon to start speaking to your child in a way that encourages body autonomy and a positive self-image down the line. The conversation about birds and bees won’t come for quite some time, of course, but a kid who isn’t embarrassed to say ‘vagina’ is a kid who is more likely to respect her own body (or someone else’s). In case you’re in need of a refresher course, Dr. Poinsett says you should stick to the following terms when discussing your tot’s genitalia: “Penis, testicles, and scrotum [for boys],” and “vulva, clitoris, and vagina (the vagina is actually the internal body part),” for girls.

Seize Opportunities to Communicate About Private Parts

Needless to say, a family dinner at your favorite Italian joint is probably not the proper occasion to have an in-depth conversation about your toddler’s penis and testicles. That said, there is indeed a time and place for everything. Dr. Poinsett suggests that the tub is an ideal place to shoot the breeze about what’s down below because, “during a bath, you can name other body parts in addition to your child’s genitalia.” In other words, in this particular setting, you have an opportunity to treat genitalia as you would any old body part—acknowledging and normalizing private parts with body positive communication, while avoiding a situation in which the conversation turns into a vagina monologue.

There you have it: Bath time is a winner when it comes to opening up healthy lines of communication with even the youngest kids about their bodies. That said, Dr. Poinsett tells us that there are other appropriate moments, too—namely, diaper changes and potty time. Naturally, any pants-down moment might pique your tot’s curiosity in their own private parts. Fortunately, this is also a prime opportunity to slip in some nonchalant, object-naming language on the subject. (You know, something to the tune of, “yep, that’s a penis.”)

Stay Neutral

Good on you for seizing opportunities to have body positive communication with your toddler. But it’s important to note that the tone of the communication is as important as when it goes down (if not more so). Even if your curious child has limited language at the moment, they are indeed listening closely and picking up on quite a lot from your tone of voice. As such, Dr. Poinsett emphasizes the importance of using “a neutral voice to discuss your child’s exploration of their genitalia.” After all, your child isn’t doing anything wrong or abnormal, so you should avoid communicating your own self-consciousness at all costs. Per Dr. Poinsett: “Body positivity is key. It is important not to shame a child who is discovering their body parts.” Bottom line? Do your best to be self-aware—and if you’re feeling awkward or embarrassed by the situation, wait until those feelings have passed before you speak to your child about the subject.

Communicate Boundaries

Body positivity is undeniably important, but there are also social norms to contend with. For example, it’s not typically cool (or sanitary) for a kid to be exploring their genitals in a public setting (shopping cart, family picnic, playground, what have you). Good news: If you’ve mastered the aforementioned tips—using proper vocabulary, communicating at appropriate times, and maintaining a neutral tone—the whole thing will likely be a non-issue. By removing the taboo surrounding private parts, you’ve both successfully turned genitalia into something rather mundane and positioned yourself to set regular limits more effectively. As long as you don’t try to stop your kid from finding out about their own body in the privacy of their home, the expert says you’ll likely meet little resistance when you lay down the cardinal rule: “We touch our private parts in private, not in public.”

What Really Happened to the Plane at the End of ‘Manifest’ Season 3?

*Warning: Spoilers ahead*

Anyone who has seen season three of Manifest will agree that the finale raised way more questions than it answered.

Not only are we none the wiser about Flight 828’s whereabouts during the five-year gap, but also, there’s the question of what caused Cal’s (Jack Messina) shocking reappearance, what Ben’s (Josh Dallas) next steps will be and, more importantly, the reason behind Captain Daly (Frank Deal) and the plane’s mysterious disappearance at Eureka. What happened to the plane? And how is this connected to all the biblical references that we’ve seen throughout the series?

We may not have concrete answers just yet, but thankfully, they’ll come with the premiere of the fourth (and final) season on Netflix. Still, show creator Jeff Rake is already dropping some major clues about where the plane might be.

While speaking with TV Insider about the puzzling phenomenon, he explained that the plane may have gone to a certain divine realm. He said, “We are now in a realm where we are talking about our passengers interacting with the divine, so Captain Daly is interacting with the divine. Where has Captain Daly been since he bewilderingly disappeared a year and a half ago in story time? Whether it’s purgatory, whether it’s the netherworld, these are terms and concepts that Ben and others will struggle to understand.”

Rake continued, “That idea of the divine taking you away, but keeping you in a holding pattern—which is probably an apt flight analogy—as your ultimate fate is determined speaks to where Captain Daly has been…What that place is, I’m gonna let Cal speak to that when we come back in Season 4.”

If you recall, Cal vanished in the finale after touching the tail fin of the plane at Eureka, then he reappeared as a grown man after the fin was dropped back into the ocean (unbeknownst to Ben). Then, towards the very end, the entire plane (including the tail fin) disappeared. Given all the chaos that’s already ensued because of the passengers’ callings (a term coined by Ben and Michaela to describe the voices in their heads), it looks like we’ll be seeing Ben and the gang turn things up a notch as they try to investigate this mysterious realm that no one seems to know about.

Rake said, “They’ll be poring through the Bible, they’ll be poring through the Noah’s Ark myth, and other biblical stories to try to understand exactly how to access this place, wherever it is, how one gets in and how one gets out, and that’ll be part and parcel of how they try to save themselves.”

Sounds like the 828ers are in for quite a ride in season four—and we’re totally on board.

Carbon Steel vs. Cast Iron: What’s the Difference Between These Cookware Darlings? (And What’s Carbon Steel in the First Place?)

Whether you’re a newbie in the kitchen or a well-versed home cook, you’re probably familiar with cast-iron cookware. (After all, it makes a mean cornbread.) But what’s this buzzy new carbon steel cookware you’ve been reading about? Is it just a lightweight version of cast iron? Not quite—but we can explain. If you’re as cookware obsessed as we are, here’s what you should know about carbon steel vs. cast iron, plus, when to use each type of pan.

Related: The Always Pan Has a New Bestie That’s Just as Multifunctional The Perfect Pot

First, What Is Carbon Steel Cookware?

JD and Kyle Shoot Stock/Getty Images

Carbon steel cookware (like this skillet from Misen) is made from an alloy, aka a mixture of two or more metals or a metal combined with another element. In this case, it’s carbon and iron. To be classified as steel, it can’t contain more than two percent carbon—for example, stainless steel contains 1.2 percent carbon, and carbon steel contains exactly two percent.

Unlike shiny stainless steel, carbon steel is matte until it’s seasoned. It’s also extremely hard (and a popular material for kitchen knives, because it stays so sharp). Because of the extra strength from the iron, carbon steel can be manufactured thin and lightweight, making it as ideal for quickly sautéing vegetables as it is for searing steaks. It has a smooth surface that’s as slippery as a nonstick pan when seasoned properly. And up until recently, it was really only well-known in restaurant kitchens and among the most serious home cooks (looking at you r/carbonsteel).

The only downsides? Carbon steel can rust and corrode (just like cast iron), and the seasoning can scratch off if you take a metal utensil to the surface.

How do you care for carbon steel?

Raw carbon steel is a rust magnet, so you’ll need to season it regularly to keep it in working condition. The process is just like seasoning cast iron: Coat it in an ultra-thin layer of neutral oil and get it searing hot; repeat until it’s slippery and shiny. These days, you can buy cast iron pans pre-seasoned, but you’re less likely to find a carbon steel pan that doesn’t require seasoning before the first use.

To clean carbon steel cookware, simply wash it gently with dish soap (skip the abrasives and the dishwasher), dry it thoroughly and apply a light layer of oil to maintain the seasoning between uses.

And A Quick Reminder About What Cast Iron Is, Too:

Douglas Sacha/Getty Images

Cast iron is also alloy of iron and carbon, but with more carbon content than steel—usually two to three percent. The higher carbon content makes it rough, bumpy and brittle, and it’s also why it’s manufactured so thick and heavy. If cast iron was thin, it would be prone to breakage.

The extra carbon in cast iron makes it a poor heat conductor: It takes a long time to heat up on the stove, and when it’s hot, it stays hot for a long time. That heat retention makes it excellent for searing meat and seafood, and getting a golden-brown crust on cornbread, but it’s also pretty heavy to lift—no cheffy flicks of the wrist to sauté a batch of green beans here.

To extend the life of your cast iron, you’ll have to season it periodically (just like carbon steel). Gently handwashing with soap and water and a thorough dry-off will prevent rust and maintain that hard-earned seasoning.

Carbon steel vs. cast iron: What’s the difference?

Carbon steel and cast-iron cookware are made of the same metal alloy and require similar care, but otherwise, they’re pretty different:

  • Carbon steel contains less carbon than cast iron, and it’s thin, lightweight and smooth. It’s more heat conductive, so it heats up fast and even and has few hot spots. The smooth surface makes it more nonstick than cast iron; it can be as slick as a nonstick pan when seasoned properly.
  • Cast iron has a higher carbon content than carbon steel, so it’s bumpier and more brittle. To resist breakage, cast iron pans are thicker and heavier—this makes them poor heat conductors but good at retaining heat.

Which pan is best for which job?

The slight differences between carbon steel and cast iron make them each ideal for specific tasks in the kitchen.

  • Because it’s so lightweight, carbon steel is suitable for sautéing or any cooking that requires maneuvering the pan. (Your forearms will thank us.) It’s also more nonstick than cast iron, so go ahead and fry eggs (or any sticky food) in it. And since carbon steel heats up fast and even, you can use it to get a handsome brown sear on a steak or chop.
  • Cast iron is heavy and slow to heat up, but that makes it ideal for searing a steak in minutes or making a crispy-edged smash burger on the stovetop. It’s also oven-safe and great for baking (especially bread). Cast iron is super durable and when cared for properly, will last a lifetime.
  • It’s worth mentioning that you should avoid cooking acidic foods (like tomato sauce) for long periods of time in both carbon steel and cast iron, since the acid can cause the seasoning to erode. And with both pans, this erosion can cause metallic particles (like iron) to be released into the food—but according to America’s Test Kitchen, it’s not a significant enough amount to affect your diet.
