3 Phrases a Nutritionist Loves to Hear (and 4 You Should Avoid)

While everyone has their own definition of health and wellness, there are some overarching themes that the pros (nutritionists, dietitians, health coaches, etc.) tend to gravitate toward or avoid altogether. We checked in with Brigid Titgemeier, Functional Medicine Registered Dietitian and Founder of My Food is Health, who told us, “Vocabulary is very important when it comes to nutrition and health. I am extremely selective with the vocabulary that I use to speak about nutrition, and I coach my clients to pay attention to the words they use to describe themselves and situations. Words are extremely powerful, and they can often make us feel better or worse about our efforts.” Here are three things she loves to hear from clients, and four she’d rather not.

1. Say ‘I choose to eat for health.’

“When you start to look at food as an avenue to create health,” Titgemeier says, “it is no longer something you actively try to restrict.” Many people fall into the trap of eating for the sole purpose of losing weight, versus eating to nourish your body—a distinction that, per Titgemeier, often comes at the expense of your health.

2. Say ‘Nutrition is a practice.’

Interestingly, Titgemeier compares eating well to playing a sport, meaning it takes practice. “No one expects athletes to make every single basket, and perfectionism should not be expected with nutrition,” she notes. Instead of punishing yourself for ‘messing up’ (whatever that means), remind yourself that fueling your body in the best way possible is an ongoing task. “And as with sports,” Titgemeier adds, “the most important thing is not making every basket but rather rebounding as quickly as possible if you do not make the basket.” So don’t freak out if you have a day full of indulgent meals—start fresh tomorrow.

3. Say ‘Eating well is a form of self-respect.’

“So many people have been conditioned to believe that dieting is a way to make yourself ‘better,’” Titgemeier laments. “But really, choosing high quality foods is a way that you can love, respect and fuel your mental, emotional and physical health.” She stresses that food is much more powerful when used as nourishment and medicine versus approaching it with shame, guilt or fear.

4. Don’t say ‘I have no willpower.’

Though you may feel like your own willpower is at fault when you reach for Oreos instead of carrots at the grocery store, Titgemeier warns that we often aren’t able to make the best food choices because we get stuck in a vicious cycle of our brain and taste buds being hijacked by the processed food industry, which heightens cravings and clouds our decision making ability. “They are constantly bombarded by food advertising and processed food at the checkout aisle of every single grocery store, gas station and drug store,” she says. “These food norms, coupled with a lack of strategies to decrease their stress response and improve their duration of sleep will make them much more reactive to the foods around them.” This one, again, comes down to not beating yourself up about nutrition. Once you recognize the need to get off the addictive cycle of these foods, Titgemeier says you’ll be better equipped to make healthy choices—without judging yourself along the way.

5. Don’t say ‘What is the best diet?’

Now more than ever, people are realizing that the idea of a one-size-fits-all diet is unreasonable. Still, Titgemeier says she sees clients looking for ‘the best’ diet. The thing is, that doesn’t exist. “Every single person has their own biochemical individuality and requires a personalized approach to nutrition,” she says. “Overly generalized diets do not work because there are so many factors that influence your nutritional needs (including blood sugar response to foods, genetics, gut microbiome and more).” The goal, instead, should be to determine your own unique needs and then to set an intention to nourish every cell in your body rather than overly restrict yourself by following a plan that isn’t suited for your needs.

6. Don’t say ‘I had a cheat meal yesterday.’

“I do not believe in cheat meals,” Titgemeier frankly states. “The definition of cheating is: ‘to act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage,’ so the phrase ‘cheat meal’ doesn’t even make sense.” She says that this type of thinking keeps people locked in an ‘on-diet, off diet’ mindset, where they’re either on or off a plan. “I recommend replacing the term ‘cheat meal’ with ‘less optimal meal,’” she notes. “It decreases guilt and helps you see past the moral value that you associate with your food choices.”

7. Don’t say ‘I’m trying to eat clean.’

The term ‘clean eating’ has become wildly popular in the past few years, and usually describes a whole foods approach. Titgemeier is wary of the term: “I’m a huge proponent of making these shifts in your diet but I do not label them as clean,” she tells us. “In some instances, the most nutritious foods are often ‘dirty,’ meaning that they came from the soil of the earth which leads to a higher nutrient-density.”

Pineapple and Ginger Upside-Down Cake

Benito Martin/Always Add Lemon

Looking for a baking project that will elicit all the oohs and ahhs? Look no further than Danielle Alvarez’s recipe for pineapple and ginger upside-down cake, from her new cookbook, Always Add Lemon. It’s sweet, spicy and practically decorates itself.

“I have a lot of love for upside-down cakes,” she writes. “They’re a perfect way to bring fruit and cake together without making separate components, and it looks so gorgeous. The best part is, this cake could be adapted to any fruit really: plums, nectarines, peaches, apricots, strawberries, blueberries or, in this case, my favorite of all the upside-down cakes, pineapple.”

A note from Alvarez: While the sugar and the cooking of the fruit will boost its flavor, if you want this to be a fabulous cake as opposed to a just-alright cake, make sure the fruit is sweet, juicy and ripe to start.

Recipe excerpted with permission from Always Add Lemon by Danielle Alvarez, published by Hardie Grant Books, November 2020.

34g sugars

Topping

2 tablespoons (25g) butter

⅓ cup (80g) brown sugar

½ pineapple—peeled, cored, sliced and cut into pieces

Cake Batter

2 sticks (225g) soft butter, plus extra for greasing

1 cup (200g) superfine sugar (see note after step 5)

4 large eggs, separated

1½ tablespoons (20g) grated fresh ginger

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon salt

2¼ teaspoons baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ cup plus 1 tablespoon (100ml) whole milk

Ice cream, to serve

1. Grease an 8¾-inch to 10-inch round cake pan with softened butter and line with parchment paper.

2. Make the Topping: In a small saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar until the sugar crystals have melted and the mixture is bubbling. Simmer for 1 minute, then pour into the prepared pan. Arrange the pineapple pieces on top of the caramel in any pattern you like. Try to cover as much surface area as possible so you can have a lot of fruit in each slice. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

3. Make the Batter: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes, then add the egg yolks, ginger and vanilla and mix until well incorporated. In a separate, clean bowl, whip the egg whites (either by hand or with a handheld mixer) until soft peaks form. Set aside.

4. In a medium bowl, add the flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda, and whisk well to combine. Add half the dry ingredients to the butter and gently mix, then, with the machine still running, add all the milk and mix. Carefully add the remaining dry ingredients and finish mixing by hand with a spatula. Fold in the whipped egg whites. Pour the batter on top of the pineapple in the pan and spread it out evenly. Gently tap the pan on your work surface to ensure the cake batter has dropped into place.

5. Bake until a skewer inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. Cool slightly before flipping the cake out. To flip it over, place a flat plate or cake tray on top of the pan, then, holding the plate in place with your hand, flip the cake over quickly and carefully. Once flipped, remove the pan and peel back the parchment paper. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Note: Superfine sugar, also known as caster sugar, is just sugar that has been ground into finer crystals than granulated sugar. (This makes it lighter in weight and quicker to dissolve.) If you can’t find it at the store, you can make your own: For 1 cup superfine sugar, grind 1 cup and 2 teaspoons granulated sugar in a blender or food processor for 30 seconds.

Kelly Ripa Teases ‘Please Don’t Zoom in on the Feet’ in Relatable Behind-the-Scenes Video

<code><p class = "instagram-media"></p></code>

Kelly Ripa might be giving us an intimate glimpse of her bedroom, but she’s not letting us close to her feet. (We promise it’s not as strange as it sounds.)

In a new behind-the-scenes Instagram video for Live with Kelly and Ryan, Ripa reveals that she’s overdue for a pedi while giving a breakdown of her daily outfit.

“Please don’t zoom in on the feet. They need a pedicure, it’s been a long time,” the 50-year-old TV host admits as the anonymous camera person tries to get a closer shot of her gold Gianvito Rossi heels.

(The rest of her outfit? An A.L.C. Top, a vegan leather Maison Margiela skirt, Warby Parker glasses and Snash Jewelry, in case you were curious.)

Ripa has been extra-busy recently—celebrating a 30th anniversary with the Walt Disney Company, watching the finale of The Undoing, et cetera—so no one can blame her for skipping a pedicure appointment, pandemic or not. And our own feet haven’t seen the light of day in, well…forget we mentioned it.

All we can say is: Someone should tell her that Babyfoot is on sale right now.

This Site Sends ‘Cameos’ but with Winter Wonderland Christmas Characters—and It Supports Artists

You’ve heard of Cameo, the personalized video website where you can send your best friend a customized little video from their favorite celebrity wishing them a happy birthday…or let’s be honest, a wonderfully bizarre five-minute diatribe from Joe Gorga of The Real Housewives of New Jersey. But just as we’re getting into the holiday spirit, we’ve discovered a lovely twist on the custom video venture: Winter Wondergram

Winter Wondergram offers personalized video holiday cards from celebrities that are a little harder to get in touch with—a roster of quirky holiday characters played by artists from all over the country. Plus, depending on what character you choose, videos can include singing, comedy, tap dancing, hula dancing and even acrobatics!

Who are the characters? There’s The First Noel, a drag version of Santa’s very funny first wife who, yes, will sing you a Christmas song of your choosing. Or Larry the Lanky Elf, an unusually tall elf living in a tiny elf world. You can even hear from the Grandma That Got Run Over by a Reindeer, alive and healing from her hospital bed. Check out all the Wondergram holiday characters here. (There’s lots to choose from.)

But our favorite part of Winter Wondergram is that it supports real artists—aka the actors portraying the characters! Curious how the rest of the money breaks down? Well, 50 percent goes directly to that artist, 35 percent goes to not-for-profit arts organizations including Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Highland Park Players and Big Noise Theatre and the remaining covers operating expenses of the project. If you decide to add a tip to your purchase, 100 percent of it goes to the artist(s) you are buying cards from.

Talk about spreading holiday cheer.

Customize your own digital holiday card to send these holidays and use code PUREWOW at checkout for 15 percent off.

This Travel Set From Away (Which Includes an Actual Suitcase) Is $125 off—for Today Only

You might not be jet-setting to Paris yet, but it’s always good to be prepared.

With impeccable timing, fan-favorite travel brand Away has a deal that’s too good to pass up: Today only, you can buy the “Journey Set” for $350, or $125 off.

When it comes to bundles and gift sets, we usually find ourselves disappointed by gimmicks and small accessories instead of useful products, but this one is *actually* good. The three-piece collection comes with the brand’s Expandable Bigger Carry-On, Everywhere Bag and Insider Packing Cubes. Yep, there’s a suitcase included.

Here’s the nitty-gritty: The softside suitcase is carry-on approved and made with a water-resistant nylon exterior that expands up to 1.75 inches (so you pack everything and the kitchen sink). It has 360-degree spinner wheels (a must), an interior compression system for easy packing and an outer pocket for access to essentials (chargers, magazines and candy, right?). The Everywhere Bag is like a day-bag but better: It fits a 15-inch laptop, has a waterproof umbrella pocket and can slide onto your carry-on with its trolley sleeve. And the packing cubes? Well, they’re like The Home Edit, vacation edition.

Altogether, the three pieces would normally cost you $455, so we consider this a Cyber Monday steal.

Kaley Cuoco Just Posted a Rare Photo of Her Lookalike Sister and We Have a Question About That Caption

Kaley Cuoco doesn’t post photos of her family all that often (outside of her husband, Karl Cook, and her adorable dog, Dump Truck, that is), but just this week she dedicated not one, but two Instagram posts to her sister Briana. The occasion? Bri’s birthday. (Cue the awws.)

The two photos are further proof that the sisters look incredibly alike, outside of their hair color, but we have to admit, one of Cuoco’s captions is making us do a bit of a double take.

<code><p class = "instagram-media"></p></code>

Cuoco’s first post, which is dated November 29, included an incredibly sweet celebratory message about how Kaley is “constantly in awe (and slightly jealous) of how cool” her little sister is and wishing her a “happy happy birthday.”

Her second sister-centric post, however, came alongside the caption “November birthday twins” with a few festive emojis. And now we feel we simply have to ask… do we think they’re “twins” or are they twins? Because if it were not for the difference in hair color, we’re not sure we would’ve been able to identify which sister is Kaley and which is Bri sitting in front of that cake. (Though we’ll admit, the moody lighting helps a bit with the confusion.)

Apparently, there is a three-year age difference between the two women—Kaley is 35 and Bri is 32—and their birthdays land just one day apart, on November 30 and November 29, respectively. But honestly, we’ve repeatedly been stunned by just how similar the sisters really are to one another. Just look at this photo Bri posted back in June. Perhaps, though, we shouldn’t be all that surprised given how much they also look like their mom, Layne, as evidenced by Kaley’s birthday Instagram dedication to her back in August. (The gene pool is very strong within this family.)

Kaley is currently starring in a new HBO series The Flight Attendant, while Bri continues to make music with The Bluebird Band and is the voice of Batgirl in the HBO Max animated series Harley Quinn in which her sister also voices the titular character. Fingers crossed we get to see these two doing more projects together in the future.

Get in the Holiday Spirit with Disney’s Recipe for Gingerbread-Cream Cheese Muffins

Being that Disney Parks have dibs on being both the happiest and most magical places on Earth, it’s no surprise that they go all-out for the holidays. While we bookmarked their recipe for mini gingerbread Bundt cakes months ago, there’s another festive concoction that we have our eyes on for Christmas morning: gingerbread-cream cheese muffins from Animal Kingdom’s Isle of Java and Harambe Fruit Market.

The muffins are spiced just like the classic holiday cookie, with lots of ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. But what really makes the muffins drool-worthy is the rich swirl of cream cheese filling, which balances the muffin’s warm spices with decadent creaminess. Trust us: They’re so tasty your kids might forget all about unwrapping their presents once they have a bite. Read on for the full recipe.

Ingredients

Cream Cheese Filling

  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1½ tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 egg yolk
  • ½ teaspoon lemon juice

Gingerbread Muffins

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2¼ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¾ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup canola oil (¼ cup butter, softened, may be substituted)
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons molasses
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Reserved cream cheese filling

Directions

For the Cream Cheese Filling

  1. Combine sugar and butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment or a bowl and beat on low speed until there are no lumps. Add cream cheese and mix on medium speed for about 3 minutes until smooth.
  2. Reduce the speed to low. Add egg and lemon juice and mix until smooth.
  3. Refrigerate at least 2 hours (or up to 3 days) until ready to use.

For the Gingerbread Muffins

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Prepare a muffin pan with 12 liners and set aside.
  2. Sift flour, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a medium bowl and set aside.
  3. Combine oil or butter, brown sugar, molasses, honey and egg in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment or in a bowl. Mix on medium speed until combined. Reduce speed to low and add buttermilk until incorporated.
  4. Add the flour mixture and mix on low speed until combined. Scrape sides of mixer and mix an additional 30 seconds. The batter will be slightly lumpy.
  5. Scoop batter into prepared muffin pan, filling each cup three-quarters full.
  6. Place reserved cream cheese filling in a piping bag fitted with a large round tip. Insert the piping tip into the center of each muffin and pipe about 1 tablespoon into the center, then pipe a swirl around the top of the muffin.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the tops of the muffins are firm when touched. Cool before serving.

2020 is the year of many things—big and small, good and bad. Through it all, there has been one constant in many of our lives: TikTok. What was initially a place that we mined for short comedy sketches and dance challenges has quickly turned into a personal shopping tool for us.

Thanks to TikTok, we’ve discovered (and rediscovered) all sorts of nifty products from a countertop dish soap dispenser to a face wash whipper. Yes, you read that correctly.

When we first saw this cute little canister making the rounds on our feed, we were pretty skeptical. (What is this silly thing and why can’t these people just use their hands and water like the rest of us?)

However, after watching the fourth or fifth video of someone gleefully whipping their boring ‘ol cleanser into a fluffy cream that rivals the dense foam caps you typically only see on your favorite holiday drinks, you start to wonder if you need a Nooni Marshmallow Whip Maker in your life. #Tiktokmademebuyit is a real condition, y’all.

The aptly named Whip Maker sort of resembles a manual coffee grinder and like a manual grinder, it also requires a bit of hand cranking. To use it, you simply squeeze a pea-sized amount of your usual face wash into the perforated cap and add water to the base before pumping the top repeatedly until you get the foam to your desired consistency. Note: You can experiment with the amount of water to adjust how thick or thin you want your foam.

The cloudy lather feels rich and impossibly light on your skin. Plus, it spreads like a dream and rinses off clean. Major sensorial upgrade aside, the biggest pro is that you end up using less cleanser over time and some resourceful folks have pointed out that you can use any leftover foam (which you will definitely have) to wash your makeup brushes

Hey, at seven bucks a pop, it’s a small investment for something we use every day.

Mini Uggs Have Turned Out to Be a Major Winter Trend—And We Found a Dupe for Just $60

https://fave.co/3moO1uW
Zappos ; Strawberry Blossom/Getty Images

In completely unsurprising news (at least, unsurprising for 2020) one of the biggest footwear trends for winter is UGG boots. Specifically, the new Classic Ultra Mini Boots ($140). This short-stack take on the original UGG style that took the world by storm back in the early aughts has already been spotted on celebs like Emily Ratajkowski, Joan Smalls and Sarah Hyland and have been selling out left and right since August. Blame it on that impossibly soft shearling lining or a nostalgic longing for years gone by, but either way, UGGs are back.

Unfortunately, we’ve been hard pressed to find the Classic Ultra Minis on sale anywhere for Cyber Monday, but we did manage to find an almost identical bootie for less than $100. Oh, and it’s also sale. Score!

The Koola Mini II boots, which are made by Koolaburra by UGG, an offshoot of the Australian brand, typically retail for $85, but as part of Zappos’s Cyber Monday sale you can snap up a pair for just 59 bucks. While multiple reviewers across Zappos and DSW (where they’re also on sale) found the cushy lining to be almost indistinguishable from UGG’s signature shearling, the Koolaburra style is actually made from faux fur. The upper is genuine suede, much like the more expensive UGG styles, but doesn’t come pre-treated for weather resistance.

The Koolaburra minis come in six lush colors (classic chestnut, black, navy, gray, dusty rose and burgundy), and the shorter shaft gives them less of a moon boot feel than the original cut. And while they’re still not exactly podiatrist-approved, we can’t help but love these soft easy booties for quick trips to the store or to keep our toes extra toasty during those cold winter months.
