How to Revive Wilted Lettuce and Greens (and Make a Crunchier Salad)

You buy a bunch of kale with the best intentions of making a big salad for dinner. You blink once, it’s next week, that salad didn’t happen and those greens are crying for help from the fridge—they’re soft, wilted and seem destined for the trash. But wait! All isn’t lost. You can totally bring your veggies back to life with a simple trick: All you need is cold water. Here’s how to revive wilted lettuce and greens (and finally enjoy that crunchy salad).

Why do lettuces and leafy greens wilt so fast in the fridge?

Vegetable 101: Lettuces and leafy greens like kale, chard and spinach are made of mostly water. Refrigerators, and cold temperatures in general, are dry environments, sucking the moisture from anything they can get their grips on. So while you’re treating yourself to frozen Trader Joe’s dumplings (love you), the greens in your fridge are losing water and turning soft.

But like a dehydrated millennial who’s misplaced their security water bottle, all your sad greens need is a cool drink of water. Here’s how to give them a second chance at life, er, salad.

How to Revive Wilted Lettuce and Leafy Greens in 4 Steps

The good news for that kale in your crisper? It can be re-crisped with a quick soak in cold water. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Fill a large bowl (or better, a salad spinner) with very cold water. Ice water is ideal, but cold tap water will work fine too.
Step 2: Submerge your wilted greens in the cold water.
Step 3: Soak the greens for about 30 minutes, or until they’re no longer soft and wilted. Depending on how far gone they are, they may not return to their prime state, but they should re-crisp to a useable quality.
Step 4: Drain the excess water and spin the greens in a salad spinner, if desired. Use the greens as soon as possible.

Et voilà, you just learned a new trick, reduced food waste and fed yourself something nutritious. FYI, you can use the same concept to keep those veg looking gorgeous from the minute they come home with you, too.

How to Store Lettuces and Greens So They Last Longer

Keeping your greens looking fresher longer is just a matter of storage. When you’re unloading your reusable tote, try one of these methods:

 • Wrap the greens in a damp paper towel, then place them in a half-zipped Ziploc bag in the fridge. The extra humidity is like a mini greenhouse for your greens and will help them retain some of their crispness for a few days longer.
 • Treat the greens like a bouquet of flowers and store them in a cup of water in the fridge. This works especially well for hardy greens like kale and chard, but will also prolong the life of soft lettuces and even herbs like parsley or cilantro. (Try it with celery, too!)
 • Go all out and get a designated container like the OXO GreenSaver Produce Keeper, which is designed to absorb ethylene gas and control humidity, thereby preventing spoilage.

Oh, and even if that bunch of kale is too far gone for salad, you could still chop it up and toss it in a bowl of minestrone or sauté it with some garlic and lemon. (You know, as long as it’s not sludge.)

What Happens When You Stop Wearing a Bra?

After a long day, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of unhooking the bra you’ve been strapped into for 12 hours. It feels so good, in fact, that it got us wondering: What happens when you stop wearing a bra altogether? As it turns out, quite a bit. There are certainly some pros—namely, less bacne and rib pain—but there are also, naturally, some cons—like back pain and more discomfort around your period. Read on to get the low-down before you decide to free boob it full-time.

Related: How Often Should You Wash Your Bra? (Because It’s Been a While…)

1. Your Boobs Might Actually Get Perkier

One of the most common misconceptions about not wearing a bra is that your breasts will rapidly sag. On the contrary, a 15-year-long French study cited by Medical News Today founds that, generally speaking, those who did not wear bras had higher nipples and perkier breasts than those who wore bras daily. Though more research is necessary, the study’s lead, Jean-Denis Rouillon, a sports science researcher from the University of Besançon, France, concluded that wearing a bra every day weakens the muscles that hold up the breasts, resulting in greater breast sagging. Rouillon admits that his findings are preliminary and that forgoing a bra won’t have the same effect on everyone, but that the subjects he studied over 15 years showed no deterioration in the orientation of their breasts but rather widespread improvement in the orientation of their breasts.

2. Your Bacne Might Get Better

“More than 50 percent of people with facial acne also have acne on their back, shoulders and chest, so it is a fairly common issue,” assures Dr. Caroline Robinson, a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist in Chicago. Acne, whether on the face or the trunk of your body (i.e., the chest, shoulders and back) is caused by a combination of oil, bacteria and dead skin clogging the pores. Back acne is sometimes worsened by sweat as well,” explains Dr. Robinson. Think about it: If you’re wearing—and sweating in—a bra for 12 hours a day and you’re prone to acne, your breakouts make a little more sense. Ditching your bra, then, has the potential to improve your body acne.

3. Your Back Might Hurt

Depending on their size, boobs can be heavy, folks. Without the support of a bra holding them up, you might find your back hurting more than usual if you decide to go sans brassiere. For this reason, some folks with larger breasts might find that the support provided by a bra outweighs—pun intended—the freedom of not wearing one.

4. Your Posture Might Improve

Though the oft-repeated statistic that 80 percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size is a myth, many bra-wearers aren’t sporting the proper size. A bra that’s too small can lead to issues like bad posture, rib pain or shoulder and neck aches. It tracks, then, that if you stop wearing a bra altogether—or if you get professionally fitted—the negative effects of your wrong-sized bra will go away.

5. Your Boobs Might Hurt More Around Your Period

Breast pain or tenderness is among the myriad of lovely symptoms many people experience during their period. Why? The hormones estrogen and progesterone both increase during the second half of your cycle. According to Healthline, estrogen causes the breast ducts to enlarge, while progesterone production causes the milk glands to swell. Both of these fluctuations can cause your breasts to feel sore. That soreness might feel more pronounced if you’re going braless, since a bra holds your boobs close to your body and restricts their movement, which could decrease the pain associated.

So, Is It Healthy to Go Braless?

Here’s the thing: It is totally up to you whether or not you want to wear a bra every day. Both the pros and the cons are totally dependent on your individual set of boobs, meaning there’s no right answer. If you try to go braless for a few days and notice your back hurting more than usual, maybe your best bet is to switch over to a soft bralette that will provide some support without making you feel too constricted. If you feel free as a bird—and physically fine—without a bra, go forth and prosper. If you’re someone who feels totally naked without your trusty Wacoal, wear it all day long, baby. Every body is different, and since there are no major medical issues that should arise from tossing your bra into the Goodwill bin, the choice to wear or not to wear a bra is completely yours.

This Is the Most Common Royal Zodiac Sign (& It’s Honestly Dead On)

Royals and the word “common” rarely go together, but alas, it seems there is one zodiac sign that has brought the two opposing ideals together. When it comes to zodiac signs, there is one recurring star sign that the Mountbatten-Windsor gang falls under. Find out the zodiac sign that houses more members of the royal family than any other, below.

So, what is the most common royal zodiac sign?

It’s Taurus. That’s right, Queen Elizabeth (April 21), Princess Charlotte (May 2), Prince Louis (April 23) and Baby Archie (May 6) are all strong-willed Tauruses. These earth signs are known to be hardworking, intelligent, strong-minded and loyal, which, if you have ever watched one single episode of The Crown or read any given biography on the royals, you know that to be true of Queen Elizabeth. (The verdict is, of course, still out on the kiddos). In fact, she dutifully ascended to the throne due to her steadfast understanding of familial obligation, which lets us know everything we need to know about loyalty. Like her fellow bulls, the queen has also been known to be a staunch enforcer of tradition, having approved all royal nuptials that have taken place since her reign began, having never sat on a foreign throne and never having participated in a (public) selfie—all longstanding traditions written in a royal handbook somewhere…we believe.

Her majesty also seems to enjoy the comfort and steadiness that comes with the status quo, a trait that is attributed to these routine and stability-loving earth signs. With 70 years under her belt, she is the longest-reigning sovereign which is perhaps the most obvious indicator of stability if we have ever known one. And while these fierce bulls are renowned for their stubbornness, their love for the finer things in life is unmatched. One look at her royal highness’s dazzling monochromatic ensembles over the course of her reign, and we can all agree that the original Lilibet likes what she likes and does have exquisite taste.

What other royals share the same sign?

Though no other zodiac signs recur as much as Taurus, several of the main royals do share the same stars signs. Duchess Camilla, Prince William and Prince George are all Cancers, which means they may be supremely emotional and sensitive even though they’re prone to presenting a tough disposition like their symbol, the crab. It’s also worth noting that the late Princess Diana was also a Cancer, which lines up with her love for family and beloved nurturing nature. Kate Middleton and Princess Anne are both Capricorns, making them highly logical, hardworking and grounded, while Meghan Markle and Princess Beatrice are both Leos which makes them super protective and maybe a wee bit prideful. Princess Eugenie is the lone fiery Aries, Prince Harry the only Virgo and Prince Charles the only Scorpio.

Hanky-Pankies (Cheesy, Porky Caraway Bites)

Hanky-pankies (cheesy, Porky Caraway Bites)

If you’re not familiar with the delightful finger food that is a hanky-panky, allow Adrienne Chatham to introduce you with this recipe from her new cookbook, Sunday Best. After all, what’s not to like about cheesy, pork-and-caraway-covered pumpernickel bites?

“I thought my family actually invented hanky-pankies,” Cheatham writes. “Every Thanksgiving, Easter, First Communion party or whatever, bringing the hanky-pankies was literally someone’s job. But after doing a bit of research in order to find ways to elevate them, I realized that we’re not alone. The tradition of celebrating functions with pumpernickel party breads (commonly found in supermarkets, they’re those sleeves of mini loaves cut into small squares) topped with a mix of melted Velveeta and sweet Italian sausage sold in a log (family divides are created over whether you toast the bread before or after topping) seems to be pretty widespread and runs generations deep.”

The final result doesn’t need any adornment, but pickled red onions add a nice acidity to balance out all that cheese. Psst: If it’s not your family’s tradition, we highly recommend you make it a new one.

78 calories

5g fat

5g carbs

4g protein

3g sugars

1 pound ground pork

1 medium shallot, minced

1 tablespoon dried sage, rubbed in your palm to release the oils

½ teaspoon kosher salt

½ teaspoon caraway seeds

½ teaspoon light brown sugar

¼ teaspoon ground allspice

¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup lager beer

1 cup grated good-quality sharp Cheddar cheese

½ teaspoon (or more, if you like) Tabasco sauce

¼ cup chopped fresh parsley, plus more for garnish

8 slices pumpernickel bread or 16 squares pumpernickel party bread

1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.

2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and place the ground pork in the pan. Cook, breaking up the pork with a wooden spoon or heatproof spatula, until the fat is rendered and the meat is beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Add the shallot, sage, salt, caraway, brown sugar, allspice and pepper. Reduce the heat a little and cook until the meat is browned and the spices are fragrant, about 5 minutes.

3. Evenly sprinkle the flour over the meat and stir to fully incorporate. Gradually pour in the beer, stirring and scraping up any stuck bits from the pan. Bring to a low simmer and cook until the beer is reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and add the cheese, stirring and folding to incorporate, creating a thick sauce. Stir in the Tabasco and parsley; taste and adjust the seasoning, if needed. Cool the mixture for a few minutes.

4. If using full-size pumpernickel bread, working with stacks of four slices, use a serrated knife to trim the crusts off.

5. Divide the pork-cheddar mixture among the pumpernickel slices and spread nearly to the edges. Cut the slices into quarters—or halves if you’re using party bread—and arrange on a rack placed over the prepared baking sheet (which makes for easier cleanup).

6. Bake the hanky-pankies until the cheese is bubbly and browned and the bread is toasted, 10 to 15 minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley and arrange on a serving tray. Enjoy immediately.

Note: I like to dry my bread scraps in a 325°F oven, then use the food processor to make breadcrumbs. Add whatever dried herbs and spices you like!

Royal News Roundup: Prince George & Princess Charlotte’s Rare Appearance, the New Princess Diana Miniseries & More

Here, all the royal news you need to know for the week of March 31, 2022

Samir Hussein/Getty Images

 • This week, the royal family attended a Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate the life of the late Prince Philip, and Prince William and Kate Middleton were joined by their eldest children—Prince George, 8, and Princess Charlotte, 6.
 • The rare appearance from the Cambridge kids showed how quickly they’ve grown up, as Prince George sported a navy blue suit with an aqua top and polka dot tie, while Princess Charlotte donned a dark blue topcoat with matching stockings.
 • Both Prince George and Princess Charlotte were also recognized for their similarity to Prince William (sorry, Kate). Not only did the young prince sport the same haircut his father wore at that age, but Princess Charlotte made the same smirk as her dad (seen in the photo above).

 • Prior to the service, Prince William and Kate Middleton wrapped up their Caribbean tour, where the Duchess of Cambridge ended the week in a stunning, aquamarine Emilia Wickstead dress.
 • Middleton also repeated the go-to parenting move she pulled out earlier that week, by kneeling down to chat with local eight-year-old girl, Aniah Moss.
 • During the latter half of their tour, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also went for a scuba diving excursion in Belize. As the couple swam in the South Water Caye, publications like The Daily Mail noticed that Middleton kept her engagement ring on for the swim. But while this seemed like a risky game, some fans speculated that the duchess was wearing a fake sparkler.
 • Meanwhile, Prince William and Middleton put their love on full display during the trip, where a series of photos showed the pair looking into each other’s eyes (while also wearing *very* similar ensembles to the ones from their wedding day).
 • Upon their return to England, Prince William shared a super rare statement, where he demonstrated his and Middleton’s hope to serve nations of the Commonwealth.

 • Charles Spencer (AKA Princess Diana’s older brother) kept quite busy on social media, where he dug up a collection of vintage photos, including a snap of his grandmother, Cynthia Spencer, meeting with Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother at No. 617 Squadron in May 1943.
 • The 9th Earl Spencer also shared extremely rare photos of his father, the late John Spencer, on Instagram. The first photo featured John in his military garb as a young man, followed by a painted portrait of him much later in life.
 • It was also announced that Spencer’s late sister, Princess Diana, will be covered in a new miniseries, courtesy of Headline Pictures and Itineraire Productions. Titled Who Killed Lady Di?, the show will take place following the princess’s passing in 1997, using a “blur” of fiction and historical facts.

This Rainy Day Image of William & Kate Has Meghan & Harry Vibes—Here’s Why

My favorite royal photos are rainy day royal photos. In fact, I discuss this in full with my co-host Roberta Fiorito on this week’s episode of the Royally Obsessed podcast. (You can listen to it here!) But this snap of Prince William and Kate Middleton in the Bahamas last week caught my eye for a different reason: It was snapped by the same photographer who took that now-iconic photo of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, also in the rain.

Samir Hussein/Getty Images

The photographer behind the camera? Samir Hussein. (We’ve been lucky enough to host him on the Royally Obsessed podcast more than once.) On an episode recorded back in 2020, Hussein even described the magic that went into that shot of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, taken in the U.K. during their final days as senior members of the royal family in March 2020.

“Normally when there’s a lot of rain, it creates havoc with your flash,” he said. “We knew [Harry and Meghan would] be walking under an umbrella, so quite often, their faces are covered up. It can be very hard to get a clean picture of them.”

Still, the resulting image was picture-perfect, a candid that caught Harry and Meghan gazing joyfully at each other while dealing with an unpredictable variable: the weather. (Of course, it’s lost on no one that this image came on the heels of *other* unpredictable variables they faced during Meghan’s tenure as a royal.)

Samir Hussein/Getty Images

Samir Hussein/Getty Images

Cue the Cambridges’ trip to the Bahamas, the last stop on what had been a rather bumpy Caribbean tour. Upon arrival, the skies uncharacteristically opened up and Hussein likely saw a similar obstacle, but also an opportunity with the rain, a royal engagement and the pressure to get a good shot.

That’s when I saw the image pop up on his Instagram: William and Kate, this time pictured beneath their own umbrellas, but with the same candid energy and joy as that Meghan and Harry shot. (Bravo, Samir.)

Like I said: Whether the subject is Kate, Meghan, Diana or the Queen, the rain is the je ne sais quoi that makes for some magical royal moments. The more unscripted, the better.

Murad’s New Retinol Eye Masks Are Giving My Under Eyes Life

As I’ve aged into my mid to late 20s, I’ve started to visibly see the effects of lack of sleep, poor nutrition, hangovers and so on in my skin. My least favorite? Dark and textured under eyes. I started trying out the new Dr. Zion X Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Eye Masks, and after using it for three weeks, I have to say, they are *seriously* reviving my sad, gloomy eyes. Listen, I do what I can to give my body optimal nutrition, but I’m human (and am a sucker for a good skincare product), and sometimes my eyes just need a little extra help.

Murad collaborated with board-certified Internal Medicine Physician, and TikTok-famous Dr. Zion Ko to create an incredible formula for under eye rejuvenation that provides an instant retinol boost. ”Murad is the GOAT of retinol and these bio-cellulose masks take retinol delivery to the next level by locking in ingredients for 100 percent benefits—meaning more ingredient bang for your buck,” Dr. Zion says on the site.

OK, but why are they so great?

There’s something so luxurious and relaxing about popping on a couple of under eye patches after a long day, and these ones are very soothing and comfortable to wear. The retinol-based formula is meant to help minimize fine lines and brighten any darkness. They’re also quite large compared to a lot of under eye masks I’ve tried and reach from your tear duct all the way up to your temple in an upward, crescent shape. The mask itself is made of a bio-cellulose that helps hold them in place while maximizing retinol absorption. I will say, if you’re smiling a ton or moving your face a whole bunch, they’ll definitely shift a smidge, but aside from my cute selfie, they stayed in place for the entirety of use.

I’ve Seen Such Improvement Overall And Will 100 Percent Continue Using These Bad Boys

I slip these disposable patches on at night for 15 minutes and can see an immediately lift and boost in brightness under my eyes that carries into the next morning. Just be sure to apply your SPF in the morning for extra protection. I’ve noticed a huge improvement in the texture and darkness under my eyes. If you struggle with a lot of fine lines and dullness under your eyes, these gel masks may be just right for you.
